she spoke to angels

she said she spoke to angels
and danced with faerie sprites
i watched her in the garden
under the soft moonlight

she walked about, talked to herself
and twirled to silent tunes
her gingham dress and crenalines
all swirling up in plumes

i heard her gentle laughter
like a lovely, lilting song
a smile so big and eyes as wide
as a summer day is long

sweet goddess, she was so beautiful
i could scarcely catch my breath
then she glanced up and caught me
though i was silent as death

and then, as if i wasn't there,
she went back to her dance
singing to the moon and the soft night air
bidding the stars romance

i watched her from my window
whenever i'd awake
and she would sing and dance and whirl
all for the full moon's sake

and then one night it happened
the truth was brought to bear
she looked at me and blew a kiss
and vanished in the air

she said she spoke to angels
and truly, i believe
for she, in truth, was one herself
and it was her time to leave

she said she spoke to angels
she let me watch the dance
and yes, she was an angel
such a beautiful romance

Abu al-Qasim al-Shabbi  The Poet of the Tunisia and Egyptian Revolution     At many of the protests in Tunisia, Egypt and elsewhere people have been chanting the verses of a Tunisian poet Abu al-Qasim al-Shabi .   Uvalde I’m struck with news and views today __ As youth and truth lie dead. Words bruise me in a mad melee __ Of mind-marauding dread. I’m stunned by words, too many heard __ To mull and comprehend— Cacophonies of what occurred __ And why we’ve reached this end. Excuses rise like ghostly smoke __ And choke my waning trust.
